RIVERBED LAUNCHES OPERATIONS IN JAPAN

Establishes Riverbed Technology K.K. to Meet Strong Customer Demand

San Francisco — January 26, 2006 — Riverbed Technology, Inc., the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today the launch of its Japan operations with the establishment of Riverbed Technology K.K. The opening of Riverbed's Japan offices further establishes Riverbed's strong presence in the Asia Pacific region and is driven by strong customer and partner demand, as organizations recognize the importance of optimizing wide area network (WAN) performance for a broad range of applications and services, including IT consolidation, backup and disaster recovery, and application acceleration.

"As the headquarters for many multi-national corporations, Japan represents a tremendous opportunity for Riverbed," said Jerry Kennelly, CEO and president of Riverbed®. "With branches and remote offices located worldwide and 24-hour operations, these organizations require application performance over the WAN that only Riverbed and its award-winning Steelhead appliances can provide. We look forward to working with our Japan partners to deliver to these companies the best performance for the widest range of applications."

As part of its launch, Riverbed will hold an event on January 27, including a seminar hosted by Riverbed's CEO and president, Jerry Kennelly. Titled "Riverbed Day," the event will provide a company overview, a look at Riverbed's products and technology, and a demo of Riverbed's Steelhead® appliances. Attendees will learn how the award-winning Steelhead appliances accelerate applications by up to 100x, and reduce WAN traffic by up to 95%. To lead the Japan office, Riverbed has appointed Shoji Inoue as country sales manager. Inoue is a computing industry veteran with extensive experience in building channel and partner relationships, and has been responsible for, and successful at, selling directly to some of the largest corporations in Japan. Prior to joining Riverbed, Inoue was managing director of Mirapoint Japan, K.K., where he built partner and channel relationships for the company's email and email security solutions and was responsible for direct sales to large customers. As senior sales manager for Veritas, he was responsible for high-touch sales and business development with IBM. Prior to joining Veritas, Inoue spent thirteen years with Sun Microsystems, where he developed the partner, IDC, xSP and education markets and was responsible for high-touch sales.

"Japan represents a strategic market for Riverbed," said Inoue. "We plan to grow our presence in the country working closely with reseller, OEM and technology partners. With the strong demand for IT consolidation and a renewed emphasis on disaster recovery, Japanese companies will benefit from Steelhead's intelligent optimizations that ensure that workers located in remote offices in rural Japan, China, or the US experience LAN-like quality over the WAN. With Riverbed's Steelhead appliances installed, file transfers that once took minutes or hours will now take seconds or minutes to send."

About Steelhead Appliances

Riverbed's award-winning Steelhead appliances are a new generation of IT infrastructure products from Riverbed that accelerate enterprise applications by up to 100 times between enterprise datacenters and remote offices. The Steelhead appliance's intelligent optimizations give companies that share data and collaborate between distributed offices the best performance for the widest range of applications, completely changing the way distributed IT is designed, deployed, used and managed.

Unlike competing approaches that are built primarily on either a network-compression or storage (caching) philosophy (like many WAFS-only architectures), Steelhead appliances are based on Riverbed's Universal Transport Acceleration (UTA) architecture that optimizes bandwidth for all TCP-based applications, including common applications like Windows file sharing, MAPI, Microsoft SQL and DPM, NetApp's SnapMirror, Symantec's NetBackup and FTP, while adding incremental application-specific latency optimizations to minimize the impact of latency on key applications.

Riverbed's intelligent optimizations also enable remote office IT consolidation, WAN bandwidth optimization and acceleration of data replication and backup.

About Riverbed

Riverbed Technology is the pioneer in wide-area data services (WDS), a fast-growing product category that solves the problems of high latency and low bandwidth that plague a wide variety of applications over distributed networks. By providing optimizations that are orders of magnitude greater than what users experience today, Riverbed is changing the way people work and enabling, for the first time, a distributed workforce that can collaborate as if they were local. The Wall Street Journal named Riverbed the winner of its 2005 Technology Innovation Award in the Network/Broadband/Internet category. In addition, InfoWorld has named Steelhead a "Technology of the Year" in both 2005 and 2006, as the "Best WAN Accelerator". Riverbed's award-winning solutions are available worldwide from resellers who are members of the Riverbed Partner Network, from Riverbed OEM partners, or directly from Riverbed. Riverbed has received funding from Accel Partners, Goldman Sachs, Lightspeed Venture Partners and UV Partners.
