The CMC also gives customers visibility into how applications are performing across all Steelhead appliances in an enterprise. It can display reporting metrics, such as WAN traffic levels, application throughput performance, and TCP session flow characteristics, over configurable intervals of time going back a full year. Its variable reporting modes provide the underlying application insight customers need to help diagnose problems and maintain control over the WAN application infrastructure.

Riverbed offers customers the flexibility to choose two different kinds of delivery models for the CMC:

• Hardware Appliance: CMC 8150 - this simplifies the process of deploying, configuring, and managing Steelhead appliances. With just a few clicks, administrators are in full control of their Steelhead appliance deployment. Configuring, updating, and monitoring Steelhead appliances are all done through one Web-based interface.
• Virtual Appliance: CMC-VE - a software-only version of the Riverbed CMC providing the full range of capabilities but designed to run as a virtualized service on VMware platforms. This enables customers to deploy the CMC-VE very cost effectively and efficiently scale the administration of tens or hundreds Steelhead appliances, reducing the total cost of ownership of WAN optimization in the enterprise. The virtual platform also provides flexible migration of virtual machines between hardware platforms and high-availability features for increased fault tolerance.
